Why I gave up living a waste free life

Why I gave up living a waste free life

Hey! My name is Naomi, and I’ve been attempting to live a waste free life for about 2 years now. It’s been really tough, and I’ve learnt a ton in the last two years, and I’ve also been in plenty a debate regarding waste free living.

Many people have an idea that in order to live a life that is comprised of less waste, beauty without cruelty, and is kind to the earth, you need to spend a bunch of cash on fancy products and spend hours and hours a day going from shop to shop to just try get everything without plastic.

It can be awfully daunting if you’re trying to embark on such a journey, and honestly many times it seems virtually impossible. I’ve been in your shoes before! I’ve been convicted of the terrible impact our plastic trail is having on the earth, and how consumerism has hurt the planet, and I’ve been in your shoes feeling guilty, convicted, and hopeless all at the same time. But, this message has good news for you.

As I previously mentioned, I have been in many debates about waste free living. Some people say it’s unattainable, some say simply recycling our waste is good enough, some people say global warming is a myth to scare us, some say waste free living is just a fad, and still some say we’ll never be able to live without plastic so why even bother.

This thought has kept me up at night many a time, where I’ve come back from a grocery store with a car full of plastic, or when I’ve sat through the garbage can picking out countless pieces of non recyclable plastic to eco brick. Many times I’ve thought to myself: “Why even bother? I should just quit this whole trying to live Waste Free thing and move on with my ignorant life!”

But, then I remember my deepest conviction, that I, little old Naomi, can make a difference, and so can you.

Yes, the odds are against me

Yes, it’s going to be one of the hardest things I’ll ever do to change my life for the better

Yes, I’ll want to give up over and over again

Yes, I will fail

But no, I will never stop trying. I will never stop trying to aim for a waste free life, because my future, my children’s future, my very livelihood depends on it.

As the old expression goes, the world doesn’t need a handful of people doing it perfectly, we need millions doing it imperfectly. And that’s where you’ll find me, living my Waste Free life, as imperfectly as it may be, and encouraging you to do the same.

What is your experience about living Waste Free? What is your conviction that keeps you motivated? I’d love to hear from you. Send us a message on Instagram or get in touch with us- we’d love to hear form you!
